9.22.2020 | Cub Nugs of Jelly Donut

Welcome back to the red bench!

This is starting to turn into “Bargain Week” here on Jon’s Daily Sesh, because today we’re going to look at another lower-priced item I picked up last week while shopping in the low desert – an eighth of “Cub Nugs” of the Jelly Donut strain from Grizzly Peak.

I picked up the Jelly Donut at a dispensary I had never been to before in downtown Palm Springs called The Lighthouse.

The Lighthouse

The layout of The Lighthouse is very upscale – a cross between a furniture showroom, a spa and a coffee bar. Everything is in it’s right place, it seems, in a minimalist, contemporary style. I had never been in a dispensary that was so open and spacious. A polite security guard at the front reception desk scanned my ID and I was in. No paperwork, no hassles…

I wandered to the “showroom” area and was met by a nice young man who politely asked if he could help me. I listed three things I was interested in and he seemed to memorize them instantly like a waiter does in a nice restaurant. “I’ll meet you over at that counter,” he said, pointing to another area of the dispensary. And then he disappeared behind some doors.

I walked around and was asked by several people if I needed any assistance… I got complimented on my dreads. I didn’t take advantage of the coffee bar, but that was being attended to by two masked employees with friendly eyes. Everything was so clean and boutique. I kept thinking to myself how perfectly the style here fit in with this Palm Springs downtown neighborhood – very chic and upscale. The herb buying experience has come a long way since I started this smoking journey so many years ago.

I had prepared my shopping list the night before, and only brought a certain amount of money to spend. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post – we budget my herb purchases carefully. I had two lower-priced items on this list, things I was going to try out for you on Jon’s Daily Sesh, and one big ticket item to do a video review of this next month.

After a few minutes my budtender reappeared with the products I had requested in his hand AND a 1 gram pre-rolled. He informed me the pre-rolled was for a promo, and I could get it for an extra buck. Hell yeah! This was going so well…

And then he rang up my goods and said the price – and it was nearly thirty-five dollars higher than I expected – WTF?!? I must have had a shocked look on my face because he quickly added that the price was because of the taxes and everyone gets surprised by it.

Yeah I was surprised, I was experiencing sticker shock! I counted out my money and I was twenty-five dollars short. Embarrassed, I asked the budtender to remove one of the items from my order. Oh man, I hate doing that. The products were already in the bag and everything.

“How much is the tax?” I asked. He told it was thirty-two percent. Holy cow! The place I usually go to includes the taxes in the price online so there is never any shock at the cash register. I forked over my cash, took my bag and headed for the exit, still feeling the sting of embarrassment.

I walked out of the place and to my car (they have very convenient parking) wondering why they didn’t list the prices online with the taxes included? It would have prepared me SO much better for the shopping experience. Now my bag had one less item in it – and I had paid more then I had expected when I walked in. In my mind that’s a bad recipe for creating repeat customers.

Me? I’ll probably never return to this dispensary. Everything was fine with the shopping experience, even though I like my regular shop better, but places can really win or lose people at the cash register – and not including the tax in the prices online just makes shopping a harder experience than it should be.

Cub Nugs of Jelly Donuts

One of the items that I did get at The Lighthouse was something by Grizzly Peak, a strain called Jelly Donut. I thought I was picking up a bargain because the price online was only $35 an eighth (price adjusted with taxes – $47.25 – ouch!). The package was in Grizzly Peaks’ bargain “Cub Nugs” lineup, bags of herb with smaller nugs. The bag I bought had 21.42% THC – not too bad.

I had a chance to spend a nice sesh with the Jelly Donut yesterday while looking out over the desert with Tania, sitting on the patio of our cabin during our “happy hour”. It was a perfect set and setting to really let the herb’s effects fully envelope me.

Jelly Donut is an Indica-dominant strain – about 80% Indica and 20% Sativa – a cross of Girl Scout Cookies and Louis XIII. The small nugs smell strongly of diesel, with a bright hints of almost candy-like sweetness. The smell, when I opened the bag, filled the room. The light green buds are well-cured – a mixture of dense and fluffy little nugs – and sticky when I cut them up. Just from the smell I knew I was in for a tasty treat.

I sat in my patio chair and leisurely took about four bong tokes over a fifteen minute period. Such a great gassy flavor, both sweet and earthy with just a hint of lemon. Yum! The smoke from herb did cause a strange tingling in my mouth – not sure why that was – but it quickly went away.

Tania and I were having a nice conversation about a number of different things, as subjects drifted from one thing into another. The weather was just right, and then, after about fifteen more minute… “oh man, my eyes sure are lidded,” I thought – heavy, half-mast. The conversation soon drifted into silence and a heavy sleepiness was overtaking me… and it felt so good. “Just let it go, drift away,” the herb seemed to be whispering to my mind.

If Tania hadn’t roused me so we could get dinner cooking I would have been in Couch-Lock City for the next few hours. As it was, for the next half-hour the Indica fog swirled around my head in that nice way marijuana does that, and eventually it dissipated over a couple hours… after dinner and a cup of coffee.

From start to finish it was a solid Indica experience – the slow build of the high that turns into a couch-lock body stone. If you like that heavy Indica high, give Jelly Donut Cub Nugs from Grizzly Peak a try.

I definitely want to check out more products from Grizzly Peak. On their website they have some nice looking herb, so expect to hear that name again in the future here at the red bench.

That was very interesting. I had sticker shock at one dispensary, too, thought the bill would be less than $100 but ended up at $125+change, crazy taxes. I finally renewed my medical card so shouldn’t have to pay those taxes again! ? Thanks for all your reviews, they are entertaining and informative! Can’t wait for the next video!

That was, as they all should be a 5 star review? Yes Do not go into those “shops that make it look like it’s heaven”. Although here in MA, ours are dumps. Unless you go into Boston hahaha. Awesome review ? ? ??
