Product Description

SFV OG by Cali Connection is a sativa-dominant hybrid that is great for patients who need strong pain relief but don’t want to be stuck on the couch. As the name indicates, this OG Kush relative originates from California’s San Fernando Valley. Although their names are barely distinguishable, SFV OG Kush is actually the Afghani-crossed child to SFV OG. Leading with aromatic notes of earthy pine and lemon, its body effects take a little longer to feel than the initial head haziness. – Leafly

The Review

Welcome back to the Red Bench – it’s time for another Red Bench Review!

This week we’re looking at a classic strain here in Southern California, something called SFV OG. SFV stands for San Fernando Valley, and this strain is a phenotype of the OG Kush family and was developed by Cali Connection Farms.

If you live in So Cal and have been smoking cannabis for a long while, then you have probably tried this strain at one time or another. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve smoked this one in the past, and like many strains, I’ve had a wide variety of experiences – from very uplifting versions to ones that couch-locked me.

Now it’s been a while since I’ve had any SFV OG and I’ve been looking forward to trying it out again – I was curious to see what CRU Cannabis brought to the table.

This Sativa-dominate hybrid tested at 22.35% THC. The dark green nugs were solid and well-cured. They had a pungent aroma of earthy pine and diesel – a very deep fragrance. I was getting excited cutting up the first bud which seemed well-cured, but that excitement was dampened a bit by the slightly dry quality of the bud once I got into it.

I was also a little disappointed that the eighth weighed in at only 3.44 grams. Anything under 3.5 grams is going to lose points in my book. I wouldn’t mention it, except I’ve noticed that every eighth I’ve bought from CRU Cannabis has weighed in a little light. After a few packages I start to think twice about spending my money with a company that consistently does that – just saying…

A Southern California High

This one had an immediate effect, and I knew my eyes were gonna be lidded in no time. I could feel the herb causing a slight pressure in my forehead, and pushing back into my brain… but in a very pleasant fashion. Except for a noticeable body comfort and relaxed feeling, this high was mainly a head high. I was nearly immediately energized and I had no problem filling out the questionnaire I do for every video review.

The taste was nice – Spicy. Herbal. Earthy. Pine. Diesel… I was hit with a stream of ganja flavors on my first hit so I eagerly took a second.

This is when the high started to kick in – and the feeling sent me back across the years…

The high took me back to the 1990s and early 2000s – before I started going to dispensaries. Often, when my dealer had pot, it had no special name, it was just “pot”. Every so often he’d have something special but usually it was a herb like this SFV OG. To me, this feels like Southern California late 90s pot. The high is good, it’s uplifting and the flavor was nothing to complain about but… something was missing, it lacked a certain je ne sais quoi.

This herb lacked that special quality, a certain something that is hard to pin your finger on, but when you’re having some really great herb – you know it. And I expect that special something when I’m paying $45 an eighth. If this herb was $25-$30 I’d be giving it a rave review, but at $45 an eighth… I can find a lot better herb than this nowadays.

I spent the rest of the evening with this herb, after the video review was done. I just wanted to see how it would perform after the novelty wore off, because often a herb will perform differently after the second or third time getting high. I kept running up against this feeling that something was missing from this herb. Maybe it was the way it was grown? I don’t know, but I was surprised that I kept being a little disappointed by this one despite the nice high.

Now the big question – would I buy this again? No, not at this price. Considering all the great, amazing herb out there, I would probably skip over this one.

I hope you enjoyed this week’s review – and until next week, best of health!
